When the Romans added a port, "Portus Cale", it not only gave its name to the Porto of today but the nation of Portugal. Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and the name “Porto” itself influenced the name of the country “Portugal”.
As mentioned by Luís de Camões, the city of Porto will forever be: “the loyal city that stemmed the everlasting name of Portugal”.
